Few days to Democracy day in the country, report have it that the latest bills signed into law by President Jonathan will henceforth forbid Female circumcision, and harmful windowhood practises in Nigeria.
President Jonathan has signed two bills – Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) bill 2015 and the Immigration bill 2015, into law. The two bills had earlier been passed by the National Assembly. With the assent of the President, the two bills have now become Acts.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, confirmed the assent to the bills to State House correspondents, on Monday.
The Senate passed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) bill 2015 on May 4. The Act seeks to prohibit female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from home and harmful widowhood practices.
It also prohibits abandoning of spouse, children and other dependents without sustenance, battery and harmful traditional practices.
